NBC Unveils Milan Cortina 2026 winter olympics logo

NBC Sports has officially released its Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics logo, continuing the network’s trend of integrating stylized graphic borders with a distinctive wordmark. 

The design embraces Italian artistic heritage while maintaining a modern, polished aesthetic tailored to digital and broadcast platforms.

The logo forms a snowflake on the surface, constructed from two symmetrical mirror-image elements that interlock around the core components—the NBC peacock, Olympic rings, and the Milan Cortina wordmark. 

This structured layout mirrors the diamond-shaped framing of the Paris 2024 logo, creating a visual continuity across Olympic branding.

The shapes and lines within the snowflake are intentionally simple, yet they echo the intricate patterns found on Italian hand-painted ceramics and tiles. 

Additionally, the outer points subtly reference the Italian fleur-de-lis, known locally as Giglio Bottonato, a motif rich in cultural and historical significance.

The controversial color choice

Unlike traditional Italian designs that use bold, vibrant hues, NBC opted for a faint blue-gray shade for the snowflake.

While this enhances readability and avoids clashing with the NBC peacock and Olympic rings, it diverges from Italy’s typically warm, rich color palette. 

This decision has sparked debate on whether the color truly represents Italian artistry or leans too far into generic winter aesthetics.

Typography: A modern yet artistic wordmark

NBC crafted the Milan Cortina wordmark using a custom sans-serif font that merges pointed, angular cuts with softer, curved strokes. 

This combination exudes sleek modernity and sophistication, making it distinctive and legible.

One standout typographic feature is the overlapping ‘L’ and ‘A,’ which prevents trapped white space while maintaining visual balance. 

Additionally, the unique shape of the ‘R’ creates a more dramatic movement, subtly enhancing the dynamic flow of the wordmark.

For the 2026 numerals, NBC continues its Paris-inspired geometric sans-serif approach but adds notable alterations. 

The ‘2’ features a pronounced curve and a shortened horizontal baseline, while the ‘6’ appears slightly bottom-heavy, leading to an intriguing juxtaposition between the characters.

NBC’s unique olympic branding strategy

Unlike previous Winter Olympic logos, which often include snowy mountain imagery, the Milan Cortina 2026 design does not directly reference alpine landscapes. 

The sharp snowflake points could symbolize mountain peaks, but the absence of an explicit mountain icon marks a notable shift from past designs.

It’s important to note that this logo is exclusive to NBCUniversal, the official US Olympic broadcaster. Each rights-holding network develops its branding, meaning viewers in different countries will see alternative designs.
