The human-centred approach to innovation also falls under the methodology of design thinking which businesses have been using for many years.

Design Thinking is simply a solution-based approach to solving problems. It is a methodology that relies heavily on human empathy and a creative mindset.

a) Incremental: Utilizing the existing technology and increasing value to the customer. It includes the addition of new features and removal of irrelevant features to existing products or services. It is often referred to as ‘value through simplification’. Even small updates to the user experience can add value and lead to incremental innovation.

b) Disruptive: Applying new technology or processes to the company’s current market. New technology is often more expensive, has fewer features, is harder to use and is not as aesthetically pleasing.

It is only after a few iterations that the newer tech surpasses the old. It disrupts all existing companies that lag behind in the adoption of new tech. E.g. Apple’s iPhone disruption of the mobile phone market.

c) Architectural: It involves taking the lessons, skills and overall technology and applying them to a different market. It is effective at increasing new customers if a new market is receptive enough.

Most of the time, the risk involved in architectural innovation is low. It relies upon proven technology and simply reintroduces it in a new market. However, it requires tweaking to match the requirements of the new market.

E.g. NASA’s aircraft cushions that were installed for safety. A new type of foam was introduced that could react to the pressure applied to it and return back to its original shape. It was first used in medical equipment but observed larger success in the consumer market.

d) Radical: This type of innovation gives birth to new industries to create groundbreaking revolutionary technology. E.g. Airplane – it wasn’t the first mode of transport, but it revolutionized transport by introducing air travel- enabling people to reach longer distances in a shorter time.

The lean approach involves continuous prototyping, testing and experimenting. Once the prototypes are fully functional, you can launch the new product, and monitor it. This will lead you to innovate your business with every iteration.
