Adobe Substance 3D Painter

At GDC 2025, Adobe unveiled an essential update to Adobe Substance 3D Painter, introducing several refinements to speed up game asset creation.

While not revolutionary, these changes improve workflow and precision, making the software even more essential for 3D artists.

Filled Path Tool: A game-changer for artists

One of the most significant updates is the Filled Path tool, a brand-new Path Type allowing artists to trace a shape on a model’s surface and fill it instantly.

This enhancement makes it easier to create intricate details without complex manual adjustments.

Path improvements now include:

  • Snapping to geometry for easier alignment.
  • Functioning as a measuring tool, aiding in precise design adjustments.
  • Copying between masks and layers streamlines the design process.
These updates save time, reduce errors, and improve efficiency across projects.

Texture baking just got smarter

The new automatic cage option simplifies the often tedious process of baking texture maps.

By eliminating manual guesswork, artists can achieve accurate results much faster, making the texture-baking process more accessible and efficient.

A new unified export window helps streamline file management. Instead of sorting and organizing files, artists can focus more on the creative process.

Substance 3D indie bundle

In an unexpected move, Adobe has introduced the Substance 3D Indie Bundle on Steam for $24.99/month, including:

  • Substance 3D Painter
  • Substance 3D Designer
  • Substance 3D Modeler
  • A curated package of assets

This bundle makes Adobe’s premium 3D tools more accessible to independent creators and small studios.

Expanding the Adobe Substance ecosystem

Adobe Substance 3D Assets subscribers have access to 20,000+ materials, models, and lights with no download limit, similar to Epic Games’ FAB marketplace.

Recently, Adobe added new Signature Collections from renowned artists Anna Koroleva and Niki Marinov, further enriching its library.

While Adobe’s GDC 2025 update for Adobe Substance 3D Painter isn’t groundbreaking, it reflects a dedicated effort to refine and streamline the 3D art workflow.

Small but high-impact changes make it a must-have for game artists, VFX professionals, and product designers looking for precision and efficiency.
